Diabetes Can Lead To Cancer!

Diabetes is one of the most life-threatening diseases in the whole world. According to WHO, 347 million people worldwide have diabetes. The leading organization also predicts that by 2030, diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of deaths.

The two types of diabetes vary in some characteristics but the damage to the body is similar. The term “diabetes mellitus” describes a metabolic disorder of multiple aetiology characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both”.

Bentham Science Publishers is one of the leading journals in the STM industry. It has journals and eBooks pertaining to topics from science, medicine, technology and the like. One of the journals is Endocrine, Metabolic & Immune Disorders - Drug Targets. This journal is devoted to timely reviews of experimental and clinical studies in the field of endocrine, metabolic, and immune disorders. Specific emphasis is placed on humoral and cellular targets for natural, synthetic, and genetically engineered drugs that enhance or impair endocrine, metabolic, and immune parameters and functions. Original articles related to Immune Disorders and Drug Targeting are also considered for publication.
A new research has proven that a drug used to treat the patients of the Type 2 diabetes, may lead to increased risk of bladder cancer. Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset) results from the body’s ineffective use of insulin. Type 2 diabetes comprises 90% of people with diabetes around the world, and is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity.

This recent research may increase the rate of death among diabetic patients due to drug induced bladder cancer. The researchers have conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the chances of bladder cancer in adults suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus using thiazolidinediones. They suggested that type 2 diabetic patients have 40% more chances of development of cancer.

This study is very helpful for physicians who are specialist in diabetes management and treatment. It would be very healthy for patients if they are not prescribed pioglitazone rather there are various other Antidiabetic drugs that could be prescribed and they do not have any carcinogenic effect.

Psoriasis- A Chronic Skin Condition:

Psoriasis is an acute skin condition that causes inflammation and scaling. It is developed by an abnormality of the body’s immune system, as the immune system that fights infections and allergic reactions. Psoriasis is a hereditary condition and most of the patients have a family history of this disease. Certain drugs may also trigger psoriasis.
It causes skin scaling and inflammation and itching. Most of the people have another symptom of having abnormal and thick fingernails known as pitting.
Psoriasis has several types, such as plaque psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, guttate psoriasis. Psoriasis Arthritis is also one of its types, which affect people suffering from psoriasis. It occurs internally before it appears on the skin.
It is physically diagnosed by analyzing skin and nails. Skin biopsy is often recommended by doctors, which confirms the diagnosis and rules out other possible skin disorders.
Unfortunately, psoriasis is a long-term illness and there is no way to prevent it.  However, there are numerous treatments available for this condition depending on the type of psoriasis, affected area of the skin and its extent.
Some of the treatments include: oral medication, topical treatment, daily skin lubrication, petroleum jelly and salicylic acid. In addition to, phototherapy which is a treatment that uses ultraviolet B or A rays. Laser treatment is said to be effective too. Vitamin A, immunosuppressant, antineoplastic agents, and biologic therapies could also be used.

Bentham Science Publishers is a distinctive name in the STM industry. An eBook “Dermatological Treatments”  is available on http://benthamscience.com/ related to skin related conditions.

Recurrent Anger Outbursts Linked To Chronic Inflammation

According to a study conducted by Dr. Stephen H Boyle of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, recurrent blow-ups like road rages may be linked to have a biological basis. Display of hostile outbursts characterizes a mental illness known as Intermittent Explosive Disorder which also shows signs of inflammation, according to a blood test analysis by researchers.

CNN health explains Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) as a behavioral disorder characterized by extreme expressions of anger. While ‘Inflammation is the body’s effort to prevent the body against external or internal pathogens. When the body faces a danger, it reacts by inflating the particular body part, and begins the healing process.’ [To read more on inflammation:Inflammation: An Innate Immune System]
The people who have diagnosed with the condition suffer from episodes of out of proportion aggression. Whenever anger is triggered, they completely lose control on minor things, hurt people, throw belongings and break property.
Research indicates that elevated level of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, which indicates inflammation in blood, are said to be linked with impulsive and aggressive behavior in people. There is a cause and effect relationship between inflammation and IED.

Presently, medication and behavioral therapy are used for treating IED, although these methods are less effective. It’s important for the people suffering from this condition to seek treatment, rather than expecting their family and loved ones to live with their hostile and aggressive behavior.  Moreover, inflammation also put people at risk for other medical complications such as heart attack, arthritis and stroke.

Bentham Science Publishers is one of the leading STM publishing companies. It publishes 116 online and print journals, 150 plus open access journals, and related print/online book series. One of the latest journals is “Inflammation & Allergy - Drug Targets”. The journal aims to cater to the discovery, identification, characterization and validation of novel human drug targets for anti-inflammation and allergy drug discovery continues to grow, this journal has become essential reading for all pharmaceutical scientists involved in drug discovery and development.

DEVELOPMENT OF KIDNEY THROUGH STEM CELLS:

The researchers have developed a unique procedure of developing a mini kidney via stem cells. This appears to be a breakthrough achievement for the patients suffering from kidney diseases.
Kidneys play a vital role of reprocessing machine in our body. They are bean shape in structure and are located below the low rib cage and one on each side of the spine. A person`s kidneys process around 200 quarts of blood and purify them with the help of waste products and extra water in the form of urine.
The researchers at the University of Queensland have proclaimed on 13th December, 2013 that they have created a kidney with the help of stem cells.
This research could cater some of the demands for transplant organs and improvisation for medical testing of new drugs for kidney related diseases.
Bentham Science Publishers is one of the remarkable publishers in the STM industry. One of their high impact factor journals is “Current Stem Cell Research & Therapy”  having articles on the current development.

Libraries Are Us!

Libraries are starting to become the trend of the past. The future holds the key to studies which are becoming electronic. The generation of the 21st Century is moving forward towards electronic sources for learning. The new generation does not pay attention to the printed manuscript; they are more dependent on the eResources that are available at their fingertips. A person who has visited, studied and spent hours in a library for the preparation of exams understands the importance of a printed resource.

Library is a great means to diminish the difference between people. Individuals of all age groups, educational level, physical ability, income level can sit together and read to their heart’s content. A library not only equalizes but empowers the individual also. The huge array of books can hone one’s skills, instruct, support them to lead better lives. Libraries also build up the nation’s cultural heritage. They collect, preserve and reserve the history and culture of a nation in the books, and other documents. The importance of a library can always be confirmed by a scholar. Even a researcher, of the most initial level can also declare that the libraries are of utmost importance. Libraries are the robust columns which support the literacy of a nation. Many children and adults learn to read at their school and public libraries via story times, research projects, summer reading, tutoring and other opportunities. Others come to the library to learn the technology and information skills that help them answer their questions, discover new interests, and share their ideas with others.

The new era of electronic learning enhances the learning, but libraries open up the minds of the readers. Learning is a continuous quest, which can only be satiated by the huge assortment of books that a library offers. Libraries can be called out-dated by the new generation but they will never lose their importance.

Gene Therapy for the Treatment of Cancer

Hematological malignancy- a term specified to a set of cancers that hit and affects the bone marrow, lymph nodes and blood. Generally, the patients who suffer from Lymphomas, Myelomas and Leukemia are not able to discover a permanent treatment for their illness and do not survive the condition.
However, the latest advancements prove that gene therapy can be an exceptional development for the cure of various types of blood cancers. Researchers are positive about the usage of gene therapy in which the blood cells can actually be used to attack the cancerous cells. The testing’s, up till now have given promising outcomes and the patients does not show any signs and symptoms of cancer, after this medical treatment. This is genuinely accurate even for the myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia and lymphocytic leukemia patients who were taking regular chemotherapies for years:
“Cancer was so advanced in 8-year-old Emily Whitehead of Philipsburg, Pa., that doctors said her major organs would fail within days. She was the first child given the gene therapy and shows no sign of cancer today, nearly two years later.”
In this treatment, the doctors are actually sorting out the white blood cells from the blood in massive quantities. These cells are then introduced in a lab to a particular gene targeting cancer, and then are induced back in the patient’s blood over a period of three days. This way, cancer is treated successfully and in a more productive method than chemotherapies, bone marrow transplants or stem cell.
Current Gene Therapy is a conventional, bi-monthly peer-reviewed journal from the shelves of Bentham Science Publishers. It has an impact factor rating, (5.318) and is indexed in major abstracting agencies, that includes; Scopus, EMBASE, MEDLINE/Index Medicus, and Journal Citation Reports etc. Current Gene Therapy publishes major topics concerning basic and clinical applications of gene and cell therapy. http://benthamscience.com/cgt/

The post is based on the article ‘Gene Therapy Scores Big Wins against Blood Cancers” by Marilynn Marchione.

Vitamins and Its Side Effects

Vitamins are very important for a healthy person. They are present in green, leafy vegetable, meat, and poultry, the list is very long. The diet of a normal person of the present times does not include all these healthy products. Deficiency of vitamins can lead to diseases like Scurvy, Beriberi and Rickets. People tend to replace the vitamins of the natural products with vitamin supplements. Although vitamins supplements play a vital role in keeping a healthy body, however over-dosage can cause more damage to our bodies. For majority of the people, taking vitamin supplements is known to be the best way to get vitamins for their bodies, instead of eating healthy food.

Balanced diet and sufficient levels of essential nutrients are important for complex processes in the body. Vitamins as supplement are introduced into our bodies at levels that could not be a replacement of healthier eating habits.
There are quality supplements available in the market. People usually take vitamin supplements Balanced diet and sufficient levels of essential nutrients are important for complex processes in the body. Vitamins as supplement are introduced into our bodies at levels that could not be a replacement of healthier eating habits.
The doctors all around the world prescribe vitamin supplements but their first suggestion always refers to the natural intake of vitamins that is meat, vegetables and other natural ingredients.

ROBOT ALERT!

A few years back, one could not have imagined that the robots will be sitting in offices and working with the humans. After the creation, and perfection of robots, they were only considered as cold-hearted machines which only performed commands which were programmed in them. They were mostly used in factories to perform tasks with precision, speed and force. Now a days, science has excelled beyond the imagination of our fore-fathers. Today, robots are being used in academic research labs and, for fun, taking part in robotic soccer leagues. The first robots were confined in the industries, but now they have started to move and explore the world. Most of them are controlled by humans but the new latest designs are independent of human control. The scientists are working more and more towards making the robots look like humans. They, not only look like humans, but also can work along with humans. This new breed of ‘humanoid’ robots are being manufactured, designed and programmed in various companies. The studies on Robotics are now expanding and new things are being added, almost every day.
Bentham Science Publishers is a major STM journal publisher of 116 online and print journals, 150 plus open access journals. It also has eBooks on various subjects including Networking Humans, Robots and Environments. This book dives into the heart of how to design distributed control architectures for heterogeneous teams of humans, robots, and automated systems, enabling them to achieve greater cooperation and autonomy through the use of network technologies.

HIV AIDS- An Important Health Concern

HIV AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) - a persistent disorder, in which the white blood cells that are responsible for the prevention of diseases are attacked, therefore, it makes the human immune system weaker.  The (CD4+) T cells and the white blood cells, plays a vital role in fighting infections within the human body. When the virus hits the body and destroys these strong cells, the patient happens to be defenseless to severe infections and ailments.
HIV AIDS affects millions around the world and even more are at a threat of exposure to the virus. Each Year, on the 1st December, World AIDS day is celebrated for enlightening the public on HIV AIDS so that more lives could be saved.
There is no such treatment that can cure the patients from HIV AIDS till date but health practitioners are working hard to discover treatments for HIV AIDS. There is a common treatment, usually called as ART (Antiretroviral therapy) is found to be the best treatment for HIV affected patients. However, ART cannot deracinate the infection completely but still it is an accepted practice of doctors that helps lengthen the patient’s life and make improvements to his health.
Over the past years, scholars have comprehensively studied AIDS; their findings are published in various scientific and medical journals. A Popular publication Journal ‘Current HIV Research’ covers the latest advances in the clinical fields of HIV. The journal includes virus replication, viral pathogenesis, HIV assembly, drug discovery, virus-cell interaction, anti-retroviral therapy and etc. the Journal publishes various research articles and reviews on the present perceptive of the virus and its multifaceted interaction with the host.
