Drinking and Memory Loss

Drinking is a very common habit amongst the middle aged men across the globe. It has led to many adverse changes to the health of the consumers. Drinking may be the reason for an accelerated memory loss and mental decay, according to a new study. Premature Old age may also be caused due to heavy drinking earlier.

Heavy drinking in mid-life is associated with faster cognitive declines for men, a new study suggests. However, lighter drinking didn't appear to accelerate mental decline. Men who consume more than two alcoholic drinks per day during their middle age may speed up the process of memory loss and premature old age up to six years. For women, no clear result was derived.

The research was carried out by a group of scientists. It was carried out on 5000 civil servants. The decline was equal to two extra years of aging for a combined measure of mental capabilities like reasoning, and six years of memory relevant product/services. The heavy drinkers were compared to those men who drank moderately or refrained from it.
Research has deduced that middle-aged men are at a greater risk of mental decay, because they are into heavy drinking for many years.  They have been drinking all their lives, which makes their brain vulnerable to memory loss.

Libraries Are Us!

Libraries are starting to become the trend of the past. The future holds the key to studies which are becoming electronic. The generation of the 21st Century is moving forward towards electronic sources for learning. The new generation does not pay attention to the printed manuscript; they are more dependent on the eResources that are available at their fingertips. A person who has visited, studied and spent hours in a library for the preparation of exams understands the importance of a printed resource.

Library is a great means to diminish the difference between people. Individuals of all age groups, educational level, physical ability, income level can sit together and read to their heart’s content. A library not only equalizes but empowers the individual also. The huge array of books can hone one’s skills, instruct, support them to lead better lives. Libraries also build up the nation’s cultural heritage. They collect, preserve and reserve the history and culture of a nation in the books, and other documents. The importance of a library can always be confirmed by a scholar. Even a researcher, of the most initial level can also declare that the libraries are of utmost importance. Libraries are the robust columns which support the literacy of a nation. Many children and adults learn to read at their school and public libraries via story times, research projects, summer reading, tutoring and other opportunities. Others come to the library to learn the technology and information skills that help them answer their questions, discover new interests, and share their ideas with others.

The new era of electronic learning enhances the learning, but libraries open up the minds of the readers. Learning is a continuous quest, which can only be satiated by the huge assortment of books that a library offers. Libraries can be called out-dated by the new generation but they will never lose their importance.

Gene Therapy for the Treatment of Cancer

Hematological malignancy- a term specified to a set of cancers that hit and affects the bone marrow, lymph nodes and blood. Generally, the patients who suffer from Lymphomas, Myelomas and Leukemia are not able to discover a permanent treatment for their illness and do not survive the condition.
However, the latest advancements prove that gene therapy can be an exceptional development for the cure of various types of blood cancers. Researchers are positive about the usage of gene therapy in which the blood cells can actually be used to attack the cancerous cells. The testing’s, up till now have given promising outcomes and the patients does not show any signs and symptoms of cancer, after this medical treatment. This is genuinely accurate even for the myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia and lymphocytic leukemia patients who were taking regular chemotherapies for years:
“Cancer was so advanced in 8-year-old Emily Whitehead of Philipsburg, Pa., that doctors said her major organs would fail within days. She was the first child given the gene therapy and shows no sign of cancer today, nearly two years later.”
In this treatment, the doctors are actually sorting out the white blood cells from the blood in massive quantities. These cells are then introduced in a lab to a particular gene targeting cancer, and then are induced back in the patient’s blood over a period of three days. This way, cancer is treated successfully and in a more productive method than chemotherapies, bone marrow transplants or stem cell.
Current Gene Therapy is a conventional, bi-monthly peer-reviewed journal from the shelves of Bentham Science Publishers. It has an impact factor rating, (5.318) and is indexed in major abstracting agencies, that includes; Scopus, EMBASE, MEDLINE/Index Medicus, and Journal Citation Reports etc. Current Gene Therapy publishes major topics concerning basic and clinical applications of gene and cell therapy. http://benthamscience.com/cgt/

Heart Attack and Mental Disorders, Are they interrelated?

In the past, heart attack has been affiliated with depression, anxiety, stress and eating habits. A normal person was accused of having either of the above described. In the present times, medicine and research has excelled beyond the imagination of the Son of Adam.
Coronary Heart Disease is caused by residue or plaque built-up in the arteries, which lead to the heart. One in every four deaths, in the world, occurs due to heart diseases.
Research has now proven that those people who have mental disorders have a higher risk of developing Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). The people with any kind of psychological disorder also get affected by this disease. Now the factors of getting a heart attack have increased three-folds, because there are numerous mental disorders present in the world today. Mental maladies like Schizophrenia, Bipolar, depression, personality disorders and many more, increase the percentage of having a heart attack.

Allergic Thinitis

A group of symptoms of fever occurring in the eyes and nose is commonly called the Hay Fever, which is quite common during the haying season, hence the term. Hay Fever, which also goes by the name of Allergic Thinitis, is caused by dust particles, dander, and even pollens of certain plants.
Symptoms of hay fever include nasal congestion or obstruction, swelling in the eyelids and the middle ear effusion. In order to diagnose the problem, skin testing is the most reliable method. For treatment, there are various methods available, such as Nasal Corticosteroids, Antihistamines, and Decongestants etc. Immunotherapy and the rinsing of nasal passages with sterile saline are additional treatments for the hay fever.

ROBOT ALERT!

A few years back, one could not have imagined that the robots will be sitting in offices and working with the humans. After the creation, and perfection of robots, they were only considered as cold-hearted machines which only performed commands which were programmed in them. They were mostly used in factories to perform tasks with precision, speed and force. Now a days, science has excelled beyond the imagination of our fore-fathers. Today, robots are being used in academic research labs and, for fun, taking part in robotic soccer leagues. The first robots were confined in the industries, but now they have started to move and explore the world. Most of them are controlled by humans but the new latest designs are independent of human control. The scientists are working more and more towards making the robots look like humans. They, not only look like humans, but also can work along with humans. This new breed of ‘humanoid’ robots are being manufactured, designed and programmed in various companies. The studies on Robotics are now expanding and new things are being added, almost every day.
Bentham Science Publishers is a major STM journal publisher of 116 online and print journals, 150 plus open access journals. It also has eBooks on various subjects including Networking Humans, Robots and Environments. This book dives into the heart of how to design distributed control architectures for heterogeneous teams of humans, robots, and automated systems, enabling them to achieve greater cooperation and autonomy through the use of network technologies.

HIV AIDS- An Important Health Concern

HIV AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) - a persistent disorder, in which the white blood cells that are responsible for the prevention of diseases are attacked, therefore, it makes the human immune system weaker.  The (CD4+) T cells and the white blood cells, plays a vital role in fighting infections within the human body. When the virus hits the body and destroys these strong cells, the patient happens to be defenseless to severe infections and ailments.
HIV AIDS affects millions around the world and even more are at a threat of exposure to the virus. Each Year, on the 1st December, World AIDS day is celebrated for enlightening the public on HIV AIDS so that more lives could be saved.
There is no such treatment that can cure the patients from HIV AIDS till date but health practitioners are working hard to discover treatments for HIV AIDS. There is a common treatment, usually called as ART (Antiretroviral therapy) is found to be the best treatment for HIV affected patients. However, ART cannot deracinate the infection completely but still it is an accepted practice of doctors that helps lengthen the patient’s life and make improvements to his health.
Over the past years, scholars have comprehensively studied AIDS; their findings are published in various scientific and medical journals. A Popular publication Journal ‘Current HIV Research’ covers the latest advances in the clinical fields of HIV. The journal includes virus replication, viral pathogenesis, HIV assembly, drug discovery, virus-cell interaction, anti-retroviral therapy and etc. the Journal publishes various research articles and reviews on the present perceptive of the virus and its multifaceted interaction with the host.
